What is Yoga?  What makes it special and different from simply stretching?

Yoga means "to yoke" or "union" and is a practice of joining the mind, body and spirit.  It is a practice of moving meditation; being in the present moment.  The focus is inward and on the breath.  The action is simple and the outcome is profound.  There is a sense of stillness and calm within the mind while the body continues moving into each pose.

I often tell my students that when I practice Yoga, it is the only time in my day that I am fully present.  There are no to-do lists, dilemmas or agendas.  My mind is still and focused.  In this day and age of business and hurry, that quality feels absolutely unique and divine.

Every student has their own unique response to the practice.  Ultimately, this question will have an answer that fits you.

What to expect before, during and after class?

To make your experience in class comfortable, please refrain from eating for a minimum of two hours prior to class and make sure that you are well hydrated.  It is always nice to bring your own mat; however many studios will have mats available to "rent" or borrow.   Also, please make sure that your cell phone is off, Yoga class is time dedicated to you to feel unhindered by everything else.  Let your teacher know of any concerns that you have about any particular injuries, etc.

During class, you should feel that you are working at your "edge" but never to the point of pain.  Anytime, you need a rest, child's pose is available or any other resting position.  The most important quality is to listen to your own body, it will guide you on what is best.

After class, you should feel refreshed and rejuvenated.  You may feel some muscle soreness but it should not be excessive.
